National Amelia Earhart Day

Amelia Earhart Day

On this blog, we sometimes like to celebrate odd and unusual holidays. When we found out it was Amelia Earhart day, we jumped at the chance to pay her a bit of a tribute. This aviatrix - nicknamed "Lady Lindy" after Charles Lindbergh, the first man to cross the Atlantic Ocean by plane by himself - was the 16th woman EVER to get her pilot's license. She was also the first woman to cross the Atlantic by herself and the first person to fly across both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Most notably, she mysteriously disappeared while trying to circumnavigate the Earth from the Equator.

She's been in the news recently, because scientists believe they may have discovered where she crash landed, on an uninhabited tropical island in the southwestern Pacific republic of Kiribati!

Today, take a moment to teach your kiddos about this pioneering adventurer and explorer.
